Online Conference

Planery Sessions - Live Streams

Overview

The International Conference on Mentoring in Teacher Education and Professional Training is organized by the Romanian Ministry of Education in the framework of the strategic project on developing the teaching career  - Profesionalizarea carierei didactice - PROF -  project (ID: POCU/904/6/25/146587) in partnership with the Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu,  Transilvania University of Brașov, Dunărea de Jos University of Galati, George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Sciences and Technology of Târgu Mureș.

The aim of the conference is to provide a setting for a comprehensive discussion on mentorship for teacher education and training, for sharing good practices and strategies in different countries, for discussing the challenges in different national contexts. Finally, the conference aims are to create common knowledge and insight into the legislation, as well as a theoretical and methodological framework for mentoring.

According to the recent Eurydice study on teaching careers, European and national policies focus on the quality of initial teacher education and a structured induction as main factors for improving the quality of teaching and learning and for retaining high-potential candidates within this profession. In this regard, mentoring is seen as the core issue of the induction programme (European Commission/EACEA/Eurydice, 2021. Teachers in Europe: Careers, Development and Well-being. Eurydice report. Luxembourg: Publications Office of the European Union). Mentoring also has the potential to support continuous professional development and the progression of the teaching career. Although great progress has been made in the development of mentoring in teacher training, several aspects related to the renewal of the legislative, theoretical and methodological framework remain to be analyzed, in the light of the lessons learned so far.

The main objectives of the conference are the following:

  • to set up a forum for the exchange of good practices on mentoring in teacher education and training, as part of the initial training as well as part of continuous professional development;
  • to offer an opportunity for an exchange of information and experiences between participants;
  • to further define the role and responsibilities of mentors, their specific training or expertise, their recruitment and appraisal, in order to facilitate a better understanding of the mentorship;
  • to examine possibilities for supporting the development of attractive and motivating career paths for prospective teachers.

The Conference is geared towards policy makers and professionals involved in teacher education and training – teaching professionals from teacher training institutions, education researchers, teacher mentors, school principals, representatives of NGOs active in education and training.

The working languages of the conference will be Romanian and English. Translations will be provided only during plenary sessions. Parallel sessions are held in Romanian language.

Parallel sessions include thematic workshops starting from a panel discussion. Panel speakers will provide their input on the topic and will moderate discussions and activities. The topics of the workshops offered in the first parallel session will be approached from a complementary perspective in the second parallel session both Tuesday and Friday.

Conference venue: The conference is hosted by Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu. Due to COVID 19 pandemic context, the conference will take place excursively online.
